Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Surty, Rahimahullah

Early Life and Education (1942-1960): On October 18, 1941, in the vibrant town of Gujarat, India, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Surty was born into a world that would soon be enriched by his scholarly contributions. His formative years witnessed a deepening connection with Arabic, the Qur'an, and Islamic Studies, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to knowledge. Growing up in a community that valued education, young Muhammad demonstrated an early aptitude for languages and a keen interest in the Quranic sciences.

Academic Pursuits (1964-1972): The journey towards higher education led Dr. Surty to enroll at the University of Bombay. In 1964, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies, a testament to his dedication to academic excellence. Subsequently, he pursued a Master's degree, further honing his expertise in Arabic and Islamic Studies, which he obtained in 1966. Then in 1972 he earned his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. These academic achievements marked the beginning of a distinguished scholarly career.

Teaching and Administrative Roles in Nigeria (1972-1985): Driven by a passion for education, Dr. Surty transitioned from being a student to a teacher and administrator. From 1972 to 1977, he served as the Head of the Department of Islamic Studies at the Advanced Teachers’ College, Sokoto. His impact expanded when he took on the role of Provost at the College of Education, Sokoto, from 1976 to 1977. In 1982, he became the Head of the Department of Islamic Studies at the University of Sokoto, contributing significantly to the academic landscape in Nigeria.

Transition to the United Kingdom and Academic Contributions (1985-2023): In 1985, a new chapter unfolded as Dr. Surty embarked on a journey to the United Kingdom, driven by a quest for broader academic horizons. His arrival marked the beginning of a distinguished international academic career.

His scholarly pursuits extended to the UK, where for two decades, he lectured at CSIC (Centre for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations), Selly Oak Colleges. Even after the merger in 1999, he continued to contribute his knowledge to The University of Birmingham, Department of Theology and Religion. Dr. Surty's influence also reached The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Oxford, where he engaged with a diverse academic community.

Published Works and Educational Initiatives (1985-2023): Dr. Surty's commitment to education transcended conventional boundaries. Over the past two to three decades, he undertook the monumental task of teaching structured courses in elementary, intermediate, and advanced Arabic language across Birmingham, UK. This initiative impacted thousands of students and significantly contributed to the dissemination of Islamic knowledge in English.

His influential published works, including "Towards Understanding Qur'anic Arabic" and "The Science of Reciting the Qur'an," exemplify his dedication to making Islamic knowledge accessible. His exploration of topics such as the Qur'anic concept of al-Shirk and the Islamic Judicial System demonstrates the depth of his scholarly contributions.

Administrative and Organisational Roles (1985-2023): Dr. Surty assumed various administrative roles, leaving an indelible mark on institutions. From being the Head of Department and Dean Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies at the University of Sokoto to serving as Vice Chairman Board of Governors at Al-Furqan School, Birmingham, his leadership was transformative. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Muslim Coordinating Committee at Westhill College.

As a Consultant to various organizations, including the Muslim Doctors and Dentists Association U.K., Islamic Relief, and the World Islamic Association of Mental Health, Dr. Surty demonstrated his commitment to advancing Islamic understanding in diverse fields.

Charitable and Educational Initiatives (1985-2023): Beyond traditional academia, Dr. Surty founded the QAF Charitable Trust (Registered Charity No. 1027642). This institution was dedicated to the promotion of Free-Adult Education in the community, reflecting his vision for accessible education. The trust published 12 books under his supervision, showcasing his commitment to educational advancement.

His innovative approach also extended to designing courses such as the B.Ed. in Islamic Studies, approved by the University of Birmingham. Voluntarily teaching a nine-month certificate course in Qur’anic Arabic on Sundays in Birmingham, Dr. Surty impacted hundreds of students, fostering a community of learners.

Research and Publications (1985-2023): Dr. Surty was an avid researcher, securing grants from institutions like the University of Sokoto, the British Academy, and QAF. His research projects covered diverse topics, including 'Islamic Judicial System,' 'Honey in Islamic Tradition and Medicine,' and Hadith sciences through the prism of intellectual pursuits of Hadith scholars.'

His prolific output included numerous papers and presentations at international conferences, contributing significantly to the discourse on Islamic law, culture, and medicine. His legacy includes the supervision of numerous Ph.D., M.Phil, and M.A. students, many of whom now contribute to Islamic Studies globally.

Legacy and Passing (August 2, 2023): On August 2, 2023, the world bid farewell to Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Surty Rahimahullah. His passing marked the end of a life dedicated to education, Quranic studies, and the dissemination of Islamic knowledge. May his soul rest in peace, and his legacy continue to inspire generations to come. As we reflect on his profound impact, let us remember his contributions to scholarship and the lasting imprint he left on the educational landscape.
